ScoreMore Basketball Camp 2018

I’m 11 years old at UCLA basketball camp and our first guest speaker is a balding white man who just sank 124 jump shots in a row. He spoke to us for an hour and missed less than 5 shots. Let me repeat that. This man who no one has ever heard of, had someone catch his shots for one hour, made over 400 attempts (on conservative numbers), and missed less than 5. That’s 98.75%! One of the younger kids asks him if he can dunk. He smirks and replies “There are about 80,000,000 people in the world who can dunk. There are three people in the world who can do what I do. Which would you rather do?” A few “ooh's” & “aah's” later and Dave Hopla is introduced as the shooting coach for the NY Knicks the year they broke the NBA record for most 3-pointers in a season (891).
There are few things I love more than basketball and kids. I was fortunate enough to attend a few basketball camps growing up that had a profound impact on my life. Not every kid will be fortunate enough to share that experience, but this week 50 more kids will. On August 9-10, 2018, I will be hosting a non-profit 2-day basketball camp for underserved children between grades K-6 from a part of East Los Angeles where the median household income is $26,000. The camp is called ScoreMore and will be held at the YMCA’s state-of-the-art facility in Downtown Los Angeles (401 S Hope St, Los Angeles, CA).
The University of Southern California (USC) men’s basketball coaching staff has agreed to coach the kids and help build an environment where they will have fun, develop basketball fundamentals, and advance off-the-court life skills. ScoreMore will host a special guest speaker each day who will cover a distinct aspect of the game. Dave Hopla will be our first guest speaker as that day will focus on shooting technique. Campers will practice these skills and engage in a series of contests that will take place throughout the camp to incentivize healthy competition. Winners will be awarded an assortment of prizes, such as USC men’s basketball tickets, NBA jerseys of their favorite player, signed memorabilia, and trophies, among other awards. The camp will cover all costs including team jerseys, customized T-shirts, basketball shoes, and catered food.
I have raised money through corporate sponsorships, but I will need your help to raise the remaining $5,000 of my budget. The camp is this week so please help me make this camp one of the most memorable experiences of their lives.
