Bucket List for Teacher Karen Gelender
About a month ago, Karen Gelender was diagnosed with a rare and very aggressive liver cancer. It was already too far advanced for chemotherapy or surgery to be effective.
Her loving family is trying to make her last few months as pleasurable as possible by going on small excursions to places which hold meaning for her. Last week, Karen’s son drove her to Mount Diablo. The short distance to the actual summit was gated off to cars, but walking was permitted. Although it was a wonderful day, chronic pain conditions prevented her from walking to the top.
Karen's most spiritual place to go is deep in the redwood forest in the Castro Valley area. Seeing wildflowers warms her heart. However, walking to these places made it impossible. I asked Karen what we can do to help her with your bucket list. At first she thanked me and said that was super thoughtful but she didn’t need anything. She just wanted to spend time with her family. However, after much thought and convincing we came up with a plan. A portable electric scooter!
The electric scooter is actually reasonably priced at $1200. With a scooter, Karen will be able to get around with less pain, see the wildflowers and take in the beautiful views with her family. Something she hasn’t been able to do for years.
Please find it in your heart to give. Give what you can, I know it is a trying time for all of us right now but even small donation will help.
Thank you all for opening your hearts,
Leticia Hernandez
