Scoliosis Care for Kenna
Donation protected
Makenna has added scoliosis to her list of medical diagnoses. Given the significant rate of change in her spine over the last year and the fact she’s only 9 (spines generally don’t start curving at this rate until puberty, which is still 2+ years out), her parents were told there is an incredibly high likelihood that she will qualify and need spinal surgery in the next few years, even with a full time Boston brace. The orthopedist prescribed a brace that would be worn 23 hours a day until she is done growing (5-7 years). This brace would only aim to slow down the progression of the curve to allow her to grow as much as possible before surgery is medically necessary (likely around 13 or 14 years old). this brace uses 3 standard pressure points and squeezes to hold the spine in its current position, which can cause muscle atrophy and brace dependence when worn full time for years.
But there is hope and an amazing alternative!!
Olivia remembered hearing about a relatively new, cutting edge, scoliosis treatment and brace that doesn’t just aim to slow down the curving of the spine, but rather correct the curve and strengthen the surrounding muscles! This treatment involves the use of a special brace that is custom designed for her body to mirror her exact curve, putting pressure in the exact locations she needs to correct and realign her spine, along with a series of exercises and chiropractics.
Traveling for quality care worked so well the first five times, that they are prepared to do it again! We are hopeful that with this treatment, surgery will ultimately be avoided and she will live a pain free life with mild scoliosis (if any) and no limitations!
Unfortunately this new technology is out of network and not covered by insurance. It will also require relocating to Orlando for two weeks. We would love to rally together this Christmas and help off set some of the cost so that the Cason’s can afford to provide this incredible, life-changing, medical care for Makenna.
She has been through so much in the last 9 years. We can’t take away her need for a brace, but together we can work towards taking away the need for (eventual) surgery and give her the most comfortable and corrective brace possible.
Thank you for the prayers, love, and support that you’ve given our family during the last 10 years. We have the best village!
