August of 2016 brought a diagnosis of Leukemia into Dan’s life, and though that shifted his daily activities, reformatted his attentions, and demanded some changes to many of his relationships — Dan's soul structure never wavered: He remained a devoted and doting husband, a concerned and invested parent, and an interested friend. I recall getting text messages from MCV Hospital as he received treatment and battled, asking me about my day, and how I was doing. He was keenly aware of when the car he hadn’t seen for weeks needed an inspection and oil change. Every chance he got, he worked beyond discomfort, pain, and that illness to be with his boys: talking about cars, legos, school — whatever they wanted to talk about.
Dan was rarely the loudest person in the room, but he was always one of the most present.
Dan and Lauren had made the family decision in the Winter of 2015 to homeschool the boys, and Lauren had begun doing just that. With the advent of Dan’s diagnosis in the Summer of 2016, homeschooling was no longer an allowed option. Wonderfully, Greenwood Christian Academy in Williamsburg, Virginia, stepped in and delivered full and complete scholarships for both Evan and Connor through the 2016-2017 school year to help the boys have not only education but more importantly something stable. As plans for the next school year are already underway, we would like to enable the boys to continue their education at Greenwood and honor that family decision Dan and Lauren made together.
With his passing on January 25, there are many holes that will never be filled, nor should they be attempted because Dan was unique as we all are, but his fierce love and presence are not easily emulated. That being said we have opportunity to do some things in the form and fashion of Dan, and for Dan — particularly towards Lauren, Evan, and Connor. The rupture they have experienced these several weeks cannot be ignored nor can it be quieted. Dan’s absence is deafening, but we can ease a bit of the traumatic turbulence by helping the boys have stability in their education, assisting the family with the unexpected medical expenses, and supporting Lauren as she bears the weight of this new financial responsibility.
Please help us achieve that goal.
