This fundraiser started with modest hopes to pay off the lunch debt of my former elementary school, Cedar Hall. The whole school had $777 of lunch dues to be paid off at the time and that money was reached within two days.
There are MANY other schools in debt in our communities and that debt can affect school funding for the next year and potentially affect the food quality for everyone. At some schools, children with debts over $20 are given an "alternative" lunch for this reason.
Due to the overwhelming support and response on the first goal, I have reopened the fundraiser to help other schools pay off their lunch debts. The money will go to other Vanderburgh, Warrick, and Spencer County schools. I will post updates about which schools the money will go to as we reach new goals.
We currently know of over $65,000 in debts across those counties. As word spreads about the fundraiser, we're learning about other school lunch debts, too.
I am doing my best to keep an accurate count of debts and donations that I am made aware of. My goal for any GoFundMe money is to distribute whatever we earn here to as many schools as possible while still trying to make a big impact at those schools. I'm also recording donations that have already been made by people (that let me know) so we have a better idea of just how much the community is doing to help.
No matter what we raise, together we have made an enormous dent in the school lunch debt and we are helping people.
If you have a specific school in mind that you want to donate to: I encourage you to visit your old school or your children's schools and find out how you can make an impact there. Making a check out to the school (with a note that it should go to the lunch fee debt) is the best way to help them directly.
Anything makes a difference. Let's help ease the burden of even more families this holiday season!
