School Is Essential - Stop the Suffering!

LATESET REPORTING ON WHY IT IS SAFE TO OPEN SCHOOL : NPR , TheAtlantic , NYTimes

The conditions set in the guideline from King County Public Health for in-person learning option have been met since the end of August.
Bellevue School District has yet to fulfill its obligation to provide a CHOICE to the thousands of students who wish to return to school. Its current proposal makes no commitment to roll out hybrid model for elementary school students anytime soon. Furthermore the proposal ignores recommendations from Public Health and shuns the possibility of secondary school students receiving any form of in-person learning this school year

Our children's lives are getting destroyed by those who want to lock them away from school. Please consider donating $200, $100 , $50 or even $25 to help our cause.  The first $1,000 donation will go towards a public awareness email campaign targeting the Bellevue community this week. With your generous support will we be able to further expand our campaigns via direct mailing, social media, online and offline ads, etc. We will also begin to lay the foundation for more parental choice via legislative and legal actions through collaboration with a growing number of organizations across the state.

If restaurants, movie theaters, and gyms can safely open then so can our schools; If liquor stores and marijuana shops can be declared as essential services then so must our schools.

We are working parents who have no choice but to leave our children alone at home; We are loving family members whose hearts are torn as our children's mental health rapidly deteriorates due to extended school closure; We are marginalized families who cannot afford to send our children to the $1,400 per child per month “learning centers” run by BSD;  We are new immigrants who are unable to assist our children with online instruction; We are pro public education residents who provide BSD with $18,000 per student per year via our taxes only to see that the district fails to meet the basic needs of its students; We are BSD students who have been out of school for over 200 days and worry that we could never catch up and compete with our peers in other parts of this country and across the globe who have been back in school for months.

Making a child as young as five to sit in front a screen hours a day is not learning. The science has long been settled that school can safely open and the RISK of delaying it far outweighs any perceived negative impact. To continue locking our young away from school without the OPTION for in-person learning is a crime against humanity. Any effort to prolong this harm is despicable and must not be allowed to continue.

Together we demand Bellevue School District to:

• Start the rollout of the hybrid model for elementary schools immediately and that for secondary schools shortly thereafter.
• Commit to the immediate rollout of a fulltime in-person learning option once conditions in the government guideline are met.

And we further demand King County and Washington State to:
• Declare school as an Essential Service and reaffirm our students’ constitutional right to education.
