Help Melissa finish her training

Melissa Buchta was accepted to the Portland Actors Conservatory in 2015. The program is an intense and immersive 2 year training in acting, studying a variety of techniques and forms culminating in performances and a showcase. After finishing the first year, it was discovered that she was limited on the amount of federal financial aid she would receive. She has already received a Bachelor’s of Arts in Theatre from the University of Alaska, Fairbanks. Moving from Alaska to Portland, Oregon has exhausted much of her finances. She now needs help from the generosity of others to fulfill her dreams of becoming an actor. As one of her instructors and mentors, I want to help her continue her training.
“Being legally blind hasn’t hindered my theatrical work so much as give me the opportunity to find new ways to adapt to the theatre space and my acting. I stay hours after rehearsal just to work on my eye contact. Or I may spend a while walking the set and becoming familiar with the space.”
Melissa is not only a talented actress, but she is a brave soul. She is living out on her own pursuing her dreams, and not letting her disability hinder her.
“Portland Actors Conservatory gives me hope for the future. Although I love the Fairbanks theatre community, we don’t really have professional theatres up here. I want a chance to learn and grow in a professional theatre environment.”
In order to continue her training, Melissa needs help paying for tuition. The entire tuition for the semester is $5850, which translates into monthly payments of $1462.50. She needs at least this much by September 21st. There is also a charge from GoFundMe of 7.6%.
This means the world to her and to her ensemble members in her graduating class. If she cannot afford her education, not only will she be missing out on performing and learning with her peers, but she will not be able to afford housing. She currently lives in student housing, and without enrollment, she will no longer have a place to live. It is imperative to her to continue this school year. Any little bit helps and please spread the word.
Everyone should have access to learn and try to fulfill their dreams no matter their disability. Let's help make it happen!
