ORGANIZER: Serbian American Foundation for Kosovo (SAFKOS) in collaboration with the Bay Area Serbs (BAS). SAFKOS is a 501(c)(3) public charity from San Diego, CA (EIN: 84-2535019 ). Our goal is to improve the living conditions and enable growth of Serbian communities in Kosovo. Since 2019 we have raised $75,000 for the hospital in Kosovska Mitrovica and soup kitchens of the Diocese of Ras and Prizren.
BENEFICIARY: Stevan Hristic Music Academy in the village of Stanišor (municipality of Gnjilane). Please watch the attached movie (in Serbian, with English subtitles) to learn more about this extraordinary educational institution.
BACKGROUND: This fundraiser will help the school purchase a new vehicle for transportation of their students. Stevan Hristic Music School from Stanišor is the largest Serbian institution for musical education in Kosovo-Metohija, with more than 400 students from all over the region of Kosovsko Pomoravlje (eastern Kosovo). Unfortunately, Serbian children and youth in Kosovo can still not move freely and safely outside of the villages with a Serbian majority population. To enhance safety of its students - some of whom come from the settlements as much as 60 miles afar - the school operates a small fleet of vans that provide free transportation to and from the classes. (Such service is common in the US, but still very rare in the Balkans). The vans are 20+ years old and in poor condition, which increases the cost of their maintenance for the school and reduces the comfort and safety of the students.
WHAT IS OUR SPECIFIC AIM? To buy an inexpensive, used van in a decent condition (under 7 years old) for the school fleet. The van will be purchased in central Serbia by SAFKOS, and donated to the Diocese of Ras and Prizren (as they can import and register it in Kosovo without paying heavy tariffs). The Diocese will lease the vehicle to the school at no cost.
MATCHING FUNDS: Yes. Every dollar donated through GoFundMe will be matched all the way up to $5,000 (i.e. depending on your generosity the school may be helped with up to $10,000). The matching funds have been provided by two generous donors who prefer to remain anonymous.
