On June 10th, my brother Simon passed away at the age of 37 after a year and a half long battle with colon cancer. He leaves behind his wife Leslie and two young boys, Avery and James. To call Simon’s passing a tragedy would be a gross understatement. He made a deep, lasting impact on this world, not just within the boundaries of family and friends, but to his tens of thousands of followers via Media Matters for America and Twitter that adored Simon’s unique blend of humor and justice.
Losing Simon was the very worst thing that has happened in my life. However, in the midst of this terrible personal tragedy, my eyes were opened to the fact that there really are some great people in this world. From neighbors routinely dropping off home-cooked meals to Simon’s family, to thousands of people who have never met Simon contributing to his family’s GoFundMe campaign, to friends and co-workers traveling great distances to sit with Simon and reminisce about better times while he was in hospice care. But what really stood out were the actions of the Bradley Hills Presbyterian Church Nursery School (“BHPCNS”) community and, in particular, school director Liz Sobrino. When Liz learned that the father of two of her students was in hospice care, she rallied her staff and BHPCNS parents around her in an effort to assist Leslie and kids in any way imaginable. She organized meal drop offs, took care of grocery shopping via gift cards for home delivery, opened up additional program opportunities for Avery and James, and also went above and beyond in a number of deeply personal ways that have left a lasting impression. My family is so touched by the efforts of Liz and the BHPCNS community.
On August 10th, I will be running in the Spartan Super race in Charlton, MA. I have never attempted a Spartan race or anything like it, so this will certainly be a great challenge. At first I decided to run it as my own personal tribute to my brother, but now I’d like to use the race as a platform to do some good. So, I am asking for donations to help boost the BHPCNS’s scholarship account to help families in need of tuition. The more kids that have the opportunity to gain exposure to an institution that showcases such wonderful character and values the better. And also, do yourself a favor and give my brother Simon’s twitter page a read. He was consistently labeled “the funniest person on Twitter” for a reason!
