Scholarship from the Heart

My dear family & friends,

With a grateful heart, I am pleased to announce I have been accepted into Upaya Zen Center’s 2-year Buddhist Chaplaincy Training Program. I will begin professional training in late March 2020 that will prepare me to serve as an interspiritual hospice chaplain. As a chaplain, I will companion, support and comfort people of all faiths as I help midwife them through the end of life. 

I am reaching out to invite your support. Your donations will not only provide much needed financial support with tuition, but will also offer moral support. Please send me off with your blessings as I enter this new vocation.

Since I completed my interdisciplinary BA in Contemplative Arts in 2012, I have increasingly felt called to tend to questions of the spirit and heart. Both my inner life of meditation and my art-making continue to draw me in this direction. Over the years, I have also had the great privilege to accompany several beloveds through the dying process, as well as companion family and friends through the inevitable grief that follows the death of a loved one. I have long wanted to deepen my formal training in this sacred work. However, due to extensive medical debts after my beloved husband, Chris, died, I have had to delay creative and educational pursuits for some years. Finally, I am back on my path and doors are opening for me. Your generosity and love will nurture my way forward. 

In order to help make this opportunity possible for myself, I have worked hard over the last few years to significantly reduce my overhead. I live in voluntary simplicity, and enjoy a modest lifestyle with a humble footprint. Also, although this highly respected program does not offer financial assistance, I am currently researching other grant opportunities. And, for the next few years, all proceeds from the sale of my art will go toward covering my educational expenses.

Anything you can contribute toward my scholarship-from-the-heart will be dearly appreciated. Your support means a great deal to me and is received from your heart to mine with deep gratitude and joy. I will keep you updated on the progress of my funding goal, and of my journey. If your generosity exceeds the above goal of covering the 1st year tuition, all donations beyond that will apply toward the final 2nd year’s tuition.
