Empowering Oncology Nurses in Nigeria: Join Our Mission to Improve Cancer Care

Cancer is a growing health crisis in Nigeria, where limited resources and access to quality care leave millions at risk. Every day, oncology nurses work tirelessly on the frontlines, providing care, support, and hope to patients and their families. Yet, these nurses face immense challenges, including inadequate training, lack of professional resources, and limited opportunities for growth.

In 2018, the vision for the Oncology Nursing Society of Nigeria (ONSN) was born out of a heartfelt recognition of the urgent need to address the growing cancer burden in Nigeria. While attending an international oncology nursing conference, Dr. Chinomso Nwozichi—a passionate oncology nurse, researcher, and advocate—was struck by the disparity in resources and professional development opportunities for oncology nurses in low- and middle-income countries compared to their counterparts in wealthier nations.

Dr. Nwozichi envisioned a professional society that would empower Nigerian oncology nurses to become leaders in cancer care, equipped with evidence-based practices and supported by a strong network of peers. This society would serve as a bridge between global innovations and local practices, ensuring that the unique needs of Nigerian cancer patients and their families were addressed.

Over the next several years, Dr. Nwozichi worked tirelessly to build the foundation for the society. He organized informal meetings with like-minded oncology nurses, presented his vision at conferences, and garnered support from international nursing organizations. The concept gained momentum. By 2022, a committed group of Nigerian oncology nurses had formed a steering committee to lay the groundwork for the society. Together, they crafted the society's goals, structure, and mission to support oncology nurses, advocate for cancer patients, and drive research and education in the field.

On November 21, 2024, the Oncology Nursing Society of Nigeria was officially launched, signifying a historic moment in the fight against cancer in Nigeria. This initiative represents not just the formal establishment of The Oncology Nursing Society of Nigeria but also the hope it represents for patients and families affected by cancer.

As the society progresses, it stands as a testament to the power of vision and collective action. The Oncology Nursing Society of Nigeria is poised to become a beacon of progress, providing Nigerian oncology nurses with the tools, resources, and support they need to lead in cancer care.

Why We Need Your Support

ONS-Nigeria operates solely on the passion and dedication of its members, but we cannot do it alone. Your donations will help us:

Equip nurses with advanced oncology education and skills to deliver cutting-edge care.

  • Create culturally relevant guidelines and materials for cancer care and symptom management.
  • Expand access to cancer screening, prevention, and survivorship programs.
  • Empower nurses to conduct research and contribute to the global conversation on cancer care.
  • Host national conferences, workshops, and mentorship programs to foster collaboration among oncology nurses in Nigeria and beyond.

Part of the funds will also go to support the African Diaspora Cancer Network. ADCaN works to ensure just and equitable access to health and healthcare for the African immigrant community around issues of cancer.
