Asking for help can be one of the hardest things to do, but there are times when you need the support of family and friends to shine light on the darkest of days. Sadly, the past two years has taken a major toll on my parents, emotionally, medically, financially, and it’s time to ask for your help; not a hand out, but a hand up.

My name is Christine and I’m the daughter of Les and Deanna Scarton. I’m lucky to be a part of this family. I couldn’t ask for more supportive, understanding, caring, creative, intelligent, stubborn, and loving parents then these two.

Life has dealt my family some rotten cards, but my parents have always done their best to make a winning hand. After many years of working and struggling my parents decided to follow the American Dream, to be your own boss, to work hard and not just make ends meet, but to build a happy financially stress-free future! My mom started Diamante Floral with 37 years of floral experience under her belt. Being your own boss can be emotionally and financially rewarding, except when you have devastating health problems like these two. They are struggling to keep the business open.

If you know Les and Dea, I don't need to tell you this, but my parents are nothing short of amazing. We never grew up needing anything. They never let us know how hard it really was. To go through, and continue to go through, the struggles, which no one family should ever have to endure and still try to keep a smile on their faces, is inspiring.

Their continuous health issues and bills have drained their personal finances, saving are gone, and 401ks are gone. Thye have cancelled their phone home, cable TV, and all those extras to try to survive. They need your help to keep their heads above water and not lose their home of almost twenty years.

My dad is a veteran who served from 1978 to 1986 in the U.S. Navy (USS Coral Sea CV-43, 1981 - 1983). After serving in the Armed Forces, he worked in dental industry as a service technician and equipment sales rep. His health troubles started in 1992 when doctors discovered a cancerous tumor covering more than half his spinal cord. Surgery and radiation treatment, left him a partial paraplegic, in a wheelchair and unable to work for almost two years. In 1994, doctors found dead spinal bone, that meant more surgery and time off work. And most recently, June 2015, a huge wound has opened in his back. You can actually see his spine through the hole, which has caused more dead spinal bones, more time in the hospital, more surgery and more financial hardship. Due to the nature of the wound and his body’s ability to recover, the healing process is still on-going with no definite end in sight. If there isn’t major improvement in the next few months, another surgery might be necessary. This whole time he has unable to work.

My mom’s history is even more amazing. She fell in love with the boy next door, well technically across the street, and they got married in 1978 so she could be with my dad when he joined the Navy. Her first job as a florist was in 1981 at the base commissary at the Treasure Island Naval base in San Francisco. She has always had an amazing creative ability and she flourished in the flower industry. In 2001, doctors found ovarian cancer, she had surgery which required a full hysterectomy, endured chemotherapy, including losing all her hair, and radiation. All of which left her weak and unable to work. In 2006, it was thyroid cancer, once again surgery and radiation to kill any remaining tumors. In November 2014, she suffered a stress related heart attack, doctors placed one stent and performed two angioplasties in her lower heart. In February 2016, another episode of heart failure and more surgery placing a stent and performed an angioplasty in the upper chamber of the heart. Both times the shop had to be shut down while she recovered and shutting down basically makes you start all over from square one. She is currently in recovery after surgery for an infected cyst on her leg which required 16 day stay in the hospital.

Needless to say, my parents have been through hell these last twenty years or so, and all the while they did their best to raise my brother and I and they are currently raising a beautiful granddaughter, who they have had since 2004 when she was born.

Your donations will help them get back on top of over due bills, make their next mortgage payment, and anything extra will go towards supplies and general day to day expenses needed to keep Diamante Floral running. The hope is to make Diamante Floral a viable enterprise and allow them to spend the next ten years working and hopefully thriving.

I thank you from the bottom of my heart for taking the time to read their story. I can’t put into words how grateful we are and how much this assistance will help my parents, my niece, and their future.
