Hi,

I'm Scarlet and i am completing a 24 hour sew-a-thon to raise money for private braces.
Any excess funds raised will be donated to Charity

I have always attended my NHS dentist and followed the correct treatment plan and was hoping to get braces to straighten my teeth.

At age 11 - I was told I needed to loose my baby teeth before a referral to the orthodontist.
Age 12 - I needed to have fillings
Age 14 - I was still waiting for those final teeth to come out
Age 15 the dentist asked me to improve my oral hygiene and invest in an electric toothbrush. Book in again in 6 months
Age 15 1/2 - He explained the orthodontist would refuse my referral if I had any decay, i was informed to stop eating acidic fruits, limit sugary drinks, not to use lemon on food/drinks, to brush after every meal. I was asked to book in again in 4 months and we will put the referral forward.

Now 16, i attended my next appointment and asked the dentist to put to in the orthodontist referral. He told me my oral hygiene had improved and he could see my gums were hardening.

I explained i had completed some research and the wait list for a NHS orthodontist is over 2 years.

When i explained this to my dentist, he told me i needed 2 fillings on my back teeth, he again explained the orthodontist would reject my referral with or without the 2 year waiting list due to ongoing dental work.

My mum spoke with the practice manager who informed us that the criteria for NHS orthodontist is very limited and they will only take the worst of the worst referrals. She explained if my dentist felt i didn't fit the criteria then he is the one who makes the final decision.
My mum explained to the manager that if this were the case, why the information has been delayed for so long, how we could have started to save and start the process years before.

Deflated my mum decided to get a second opinion and booked me in for a private consultation at a different dentist to seek out my options.
I attended a private consultation at a orthodontist on Friday 11th April. He inspected my mouth, took several photos of my teeth as well as scans.
The dentist reviewed my scans and produced a simulation of having braces fitted and the before and after results. To my surprise, he would not need to remove any of my original teeth, my mouth is in really good shape and once i have braces fitted, i'd only need to wear them for 15 months.

The total cost of private braces will be £3600

So here i am.....

I am completing a 24 hours Sew-a-thon to create a Bubble quilt. I will ticket this off at the end of the event.
