Scanning Declassified Spy Satellite Imagery Pt. 2!
Donation protected
In 2022 the amazing space community raised nearly $2,500 to scan 55 declassified spy satellite images of various spaceports around the world, and made them completely free for the public to view! See: https://www.gofundme.com/f/scan-declassified-satellite-imagery.
Now we're back for round two and shooting for an even bigger goal! $5,000 AUD (~$3,300 USD), which is equal to around 110 images ($30 USD per image) that have previously not been seen by the public before.
During a quick count, I calculated there is over $200,000 worth of images that are yet to be scanned, and that's only over the major spaceports of the world at that time! So we're only just barely scratching the surface here.
All of the money will go directly into the scanning of the images. Once scanned the images will be available for anyone in the world to view, both on the USGS's website and my website (https://spacefromspace.com/declassified-satellite-images). In addition to this, I will start live streaming as I work through and process the images. This will be a fun way to add interactivity to the process and share some extra insight with everyone.
Why is this important?
This satellite imagery from the 1960s, 70s, and 80s is not only cool to look at, but also serves an important purpose as a historical record for earth observation studies. While space nerds like myself may just want to look at cool locations from the past, other researchers may use this imagery for purposes such as studying coastlines, deforestation, urban growth, and so much more.
