Our family's heart, Momma Naomi, a kind and resilient woman living on a limited income, became the target of a sophisticated scam in September 2025. This is her story, and a plea to protect others from similar heartbreak.
On September 29th, Naomi received a chilling notification. It contained her actual bank account numbers, warning of unauthorized withdrawals. The message urged her to call the provided number immediately. Believing it was her bank, she made the call, unknowingly connecting with a skilled scammer posing as a fraud investigator.
The scammer masterfully manipulated Naomi. He convinced her to withdraw her checking and savings, instructing her to avoid discussing the matter with bank employees. He then directed her to deposit the funds into cryptocurrency machines, Green Dot Walmart cards, and Apple Gift Cards, falsely claiming this was a secure way to protect her money. She was manipulated into thinking that she was acting in accordance with the bank's recommendations.
At the time, I was grieving a loss in my significant other's family. Momma Naomi, selfless as always, didn't want to burden me with her troubles and tried to handle the situation alone. This highlights how scammers prey on kindness and vulnerability, exploiting our trust and concern for others.
