Scammed by Fake TikTok Job

My name is B Terry, and if you’re reading this, I’m truly grateful for your time and energy.

Recently, I became a victim to an online job scam disguised as a remote role titled TikTok Content Assistant (see image below). The work seemed simple enough liking content in exchange for small payments. It appeared harmless and easy. As time went on, I was told I’d been upgraded to “VIP” status, which meant I could earn more by liking more videos. To access this, I was asked to download several apps and was eventually promoted to “VIP2.”

After two days, I was handed over to a ‘mentor’. That’s when everything changed. Within just five hours, I lost over £4,000. As a working class creative in the performing arts, this is a significant amount for me, that has taken years to save.

At first, they sent me money, asking me to move it through crypto apps. Then came the pressure to invest my own savings. I was added to a group chat with others, and things escalated quickly. I kept putting in more money through an app I didn’t understand, desperately trying to recover what I had already lost. Before I knew it, I was trapped.

Thankfully, my bank noticed the suspicious activity and blocked further transactions. That’s when I broke down and told my partner what had happened. I contacted Action Fraud, who were incredibly kind and supported me in reporting the crime. They have drawn up a full report and I have a crime reference number. Unfortunately, both Barclays and Monzo informed me there’s nothing they can do, as the funds were willingly transferred to accounts controlled by scammers.

I’ve also reached out to the crypto platforms involved. But due to the nature of blockchain transactions, the funds can’t be reversed or recovered. The scammers remain anonymous and untraceable.

It’s a textbook scam. And it’s left me feeling embarrassed, vulnerable, and deeply shaken. As someone who doesn’t use social media much, I had no idea scams like this existed.
