Scaling up Mental Health Capacity in Uganda

Funds are needed to support five incoming students who have successfully completed their Bachelors' Program and are now scheduled to enroll in the Master's Level Clinical Psychology Program at Makerere University, Kampala, Uganda.  These students are exemplary students whose financial situations do not allow them to continue unless funding is found.  These students have been identified by Dr. Rosco Kasujja, Director of the university's clinical psychology program as being of the caliber needed to advance mental health in their communities in Uganda.  Each student who receives funding will commit to completing the program, to maintaining a 3.5 average, and to giving two years of service to their communities. These students come from four different regions of Uganda where specialized mental care is not available.  The funding needed for a two-year Master's program for all five totals $61,500.00. The budget per student for 2 years breaks down as follows:

Tuition:           $4,000.00 per student x 5 students =           20,000.00
School administration fees:    $500.00 per student x5 =   2,500.00
Room and board:     $2500.00 x 5 =                                               12,500.00
Textbooks, lab fees, and materials =    $2000.00 x 5=        10,000.00
Practicum, internship, placement =  $500.00 x 5=                2,500.00
Field Research=  1200.00x 5=                                                           6,000.00
Health Insurance =   $1600.00 x 5 =                                              8,000.00
Transportation = $1200.00 x 5=                                                      6,000.00

                                                                           Total:                                     67,500.00

Total required to fund five students through a two-year program totals Sixty-seven Thousand Five Hundred Dollars.

These students' lives and the lives their communities will be transformed by your donations.  Uganda, specifically Northern Uganda, has experienced rebel activities and currently is host to thousands of refugees from the Congo, South Sudan, Somalia, Burundi and others.  The need for mental care, specifically trauma intervention, is extreme and skilled clinicians are few.  Your contribution to this fund will help to alleviate extreme mental suffering in populations that have escaped extreme trauma.
