Introduction:
Welcome to Scaling Hope! We're embarking on a challenging journey to conquer Everest Base Camp, not just for the thrill of adventure, but to rally support for a dear friend in need. Bernard Cheung has recently been diagnosed with stage IV cancer at the young age of 44. With a wife and two young sons aged 6 and 9, Bernard's journey is not just his own; it's a battle that impacts his entire family.
Why Scaling Hope Matters:
Bernard's diagnosis has shaken me to the core, but it's also ignited a spirit of solidarity and determination within me. As someone who've known Bernard for 25 years, our bond goes beyond mere friendship – it's a testament to the shared experiences, the laughter, and the hardships we've endured together.
I still vividly remember when we met. It was my first day on UNBC’s campus. Walking into Math101, feeling intimidated because I had never been to a university lecture hall, I instantly recognized Bernard as a fellow misfit. What started as late-night study sessions soon turned into overnight Counterstrike battles, binge-drinking Karaoke parties, and eventually, a brotherhood that transcends time.
Over the course of the following 25 years, our lives intertwined in ways we never imagined. We became neighbors off camps, graduated university with the same degrees on the same day, and even got married a week apart. I had the honor of standing by Bernard's side as his groomsman and became the godfather to his children. Our friendship has weathered many storms, but nothing could have prepared us for the challenge that Bernard now faces.
In January 2023, Bernard was diagnosed with Stage II colon cancer. After a major surgery and 6 months of recovery and gruelling chemotherapy, victory was declared against his disease and we celebrated. Unfortunately, a few months later, the disease came back metastasized and is now a rare form of stage IV peritoneal cancer.
Despite this setback, Bernard’s determination to defeat the disease remains unwavering. And we are calling on our communities to join the battle.
Our Goal:
Our mission is twofold: to conquer the heights of Everest Base Camp and to raise funds to support Bernard and his family during this difficult time. We're setting a fundraising goal of CAD$30,000 to cover medical expenses, household bills, and to provide some peace of mind for Bernard and his family as they navigate through this journey.
The Challenge of the Everest Base Camp Trek:
Trekking to Everest Base Camp is no small feat. Over the course of 12 days and 11 nights, I will trek more than 130km while carrying all my supplies in my backpack. I will ascend approximately 5,364 vertical meters (17,598 feet) above sea level, navigating rugged terrain and facing unpredictable weather conditions. Each day, I will trek for an average of 5-7 hours. Along the way, I will stay in basic teahouse accommodations, experiencing the warmth of Nepalese hospitality and the fidget temperatures of high altitude, all amidst the stunning backdrop of the Himalayas.
I will face steep ascents, rocky trails, and freezing temperatures, and at the same time battling altitude sickness and fatigue. Despite the physical and mental challenges, I'll draw strength from Bernard and his family's resilience and determination, reminding myself that our efforts are nothing compared to the challenges they are facing.
