My daughter Madison Matthews is a vibrant and fun loving young woman. She's funny and smart too. She loves riding, training and caring for horses. Maddie has just started to figure out what her life can be. The challenges of life and the things we learn from overcoming them are not typically plentiful when you are only 20 years old. Madison is now faced with a serious personal challenge: her recent diagnosis of Small Cell Ovarian Cancer- Hypercalcemia. Help her win her fight and get back on the path to living and loving life to it's fullest!
In January 2017 Madison felt something was not right with her. She was having pain and could not keep food down. In early March she was in severe pain and sought relief at urgent care.
Within a few moments, after a blood test, the staff instructed her to head to the ER. After a series of tests, her calcium level was too high, which was causing her to be sick. An ultra sound was ordered and a 14cm mass was discovered on her ovary. Madison was admitted for a few days to get the calcium count down. and within a week she was scheduled for surgery.
The results of the surgery were not great. Madison was diagnosed with stage 2b, ovarian small cell carcinoma, hypercalcemia. A very agressive and rare cancer. She is one of maybe 500 people in the world to be diagnosed with this type of cancer.
Madison has begun aggressive chemo-therapy and is responding well to treatment. She has been seen by and had her case reviewed by some of the best oncologists in the country including Duke University where she will soon be receiving gene replacement therapy. She still has a long road ahead before she can get back to a normal life. Her treatments take a lot of time and energy. She cannot work and like all of us, she has needs and needs financial support.
Part of our goal is to raise awareness for ovarian cancer and support Madison as well as others in need. We also will donote fund to cancer research to what is called orphan cancers. Cancers that are aggressive and so rare that little research is done or can be studied because there are few survivors to gain insight on how the cancer works.
