The SBG Book Club was founded, by Jouelzy, in 2020, with the goal of focusing on making deep reading accessible across diverse knowledge bases. Our staff of post-graduate Black women and nonbinary researchers curate syllabi that serve as reading guides, and host live online discussions with authors and content experts to provide contextual + historical analysis for our readings.
Because the mis- and disinformation that is targeted at Black people in digital spaces routinely goes unchecked, we know that we must come together to equip our community with the resources and information needed to resist the rampant white supremacist, capitalistic, patriarchal, and heteronormative online rhetoric. In the past two years we have produced dozens of reading guides, and hosted over 95 live discussions in order to dismantle the barriers that can make deep reading inaccessible. Our audience has engaged with over 15,000 hours of digital conversations, covering topics including black feminism, gender + sexuality, capitalism, surveillance, fatphobia, imperialism, indigeneity, and more. We have curated intimate and accessible spaces with authors such as Dr. Patricia Hill Collins, Kiese Laymon, Mikki Kendall, and Robert Jones, Jr. to unpack the critical topics in their texts.
If we met the goal of our GoFundMe campaign, your donation will help us to expand and deepen this work via:
- Producing higher quality video content
- Produce series that are specific to various age groups & interests: teens, young adults, introduction to Black Feminism, and non-binary/queer identity series, amongst others.
- Pay our staff an equitable rate for their labor.
- Update our website to comply with ADA guidelines.
Please help us reach our goal by donating and sharing!
