My name is Matt and I’m reaching out for support after a medical emergency nearly took my life and changed it in ways I’m still coming to terms with. I was very hesitant to make a GoFundMe, but after a lot of encouragement from close friends, I’ve realized that it’s okay to ask for help and that I don’t have to go through this alone.
Earlier this year while on tour in Canada, I suffered a severe and life-threatening allergic reaction. By the time I landed back in the US and went to the emergency room, my eyes and throat were nearly swollen shut. Standard treatments of multiple doses of epinephrine and steroids failed to reverse the reaction. In a last-resort effort to save my life, doctors injected me with a C1 esterase inhibitor - a medication typically used in extremely rare cases of angioedema (1 in 100,000). Working in music unfortunately means my health insurance is not the best; this treatment cost close to $250,000 alone.
Thankfully, this same treatment helped stabilize the reaction over the next month while I remained in and out of the ICU + hospital. Unfortunately, it came with severe side effects: it triggered multiple blood clots throughout my upper body. What was supposed to be a lifesaving treatment became the beginning of a long, painful journey I’m still navigating today.
Since then, I’ve been living with the aftermath: chronic pain, reduced mobility in my upper body, and ongoing treatments. The physical toll has been immense, and the emotional and financial burdens continue to weigh heavily. I was forced to pause work for close to three months, drastically restructure my life, and take on large amounts of unexpected medical debt.
I’m asking for help to cover:
• Ongoing treatment and monitoring of the blood clots
• Specialist visits and diagnostic scans
• Medical expenses I can’t afford on my own
Anything you can give, even just sharing this campaign, means more than I can say.
Thank you for reading, and for any help you can offer.
Matt
