For years, St. Benedict's Playground, located at Third and Mound Street in Atchison, Kansas, has been the "meet up" point for so many in our community. We want this playground to be a safe, fun spot for kids to "meet up" for years to come. The playground is in great need of repair. The retaining wall is crumbling, the equipment is outdated and needs to be replaced.
Diane Liebsch, the past principal of St. Benedict Catholic School (SBCS), has been writing grants and supporting school fundraisers for the last five years to update “The Playground”. The plan includes buying new, safer play equipment and repairing the crumbling wall. She has secured $125,000 of the $250,000 that will be needed to complete the project.
This gofundme was developed to help raise the rest of the money and hopefully build a reserve to help maintain the playground for future generations.
We’re asking for you to contribute to this project as a memorial to your childhood.
• For your parents, who told you to be home with the church bell rings or who sent the dog when it was time to come home from playing.
• For the State Farm Steeler players who practiced at the playground for years while your parents hung on the fence and watched.
• For the summer pick-up games that ended when it got dark.
• For the friends who you met up with.
• For the foul balls over the fence (that may have broke a window or two).
• For kicking your shoes from the swings and climbing on the monkey bars.
• For laughing at the neighbor “Hillbilly” who yelled when you lit off fireworks and then running from the police.
• For hours of bike-riding and roller-skating.
• For wonderful memories that weren’t planned or scheduled, but just happened.
