Hello everyone, my name is Astrid (legal), though most of you may know me as Thursday. I’m am currently finishing up my A.S. in Mathematics at the City Colleges of Chicago, and I’ll be starting my A.S. in Engineering next semester before transferring to a four-year university.
I’m raising funds to get a laptop for school.. something reliable and long-term that I can use throughout my time in school.
Last year, my old Macbook took its final breath in my kitchen (it was on its last leg). Up until now, I’ve managed without a computer but this semester was different.. on the very first day of my chemistry class, we were asked to submit an online assignment. I ended up typing and submitting it on my phone, which was annoying, to say the least.
Since then, I’ve been sharing an outdated iPad with my dad, which has been kind but limiting. I wpuld love to give him back full use of it so he can enjoy his Sudoku games in peace and so I can have the freedom to study wherever I would like with accessibility (trying to type math equations on an iPad is impractical!!!!)
I’ve applied to multiple scholarships, though most won’t come through (if I’m lucky) until next year. Having my own laptop would relieve a huge financial burden and allow me to focus more on my studies rather than worrying about how to complete assignments or setting time aside to go to a library and be limited by 1 hour computer slots.
If you've read this far, thanks for the support! No amount is too small, even just sharing is proven to help with outreach.
FAQ
Q: Doesn’t City Colleges have a loaner laptop program?
A: they do offer a loaner laptop program. However, they only allow students to borrow laptops for 60 days at a time, which isn’t a long-term solution.
Q: Aren’t Chromebooks or MacBook Airs discounted for students?
A: They are and while I do love (and prefer) Apple products, a Windows laptop is the safer and more compatible choice. Most STEM programs, softwares, and simulators don’t run smoothly (or at all) on macOS or Chromebooks.
