SAYURI GOES TO COLLEGE

My name is Sayuri Gomez- I am an advocate for human rights and an artist. I identify as a queer undocumented Mexicana and I am currently residing in Brooklyn, NY.  As a daughter of immigrant parents I was given the role of advocate and interpreter at a very young age.  I assisted my immediate family and neighbors with facilitating conversations between landlords, hospitals, police, and other institutions.  Learning how to advocate for the most vulnerable populations allowed me to prepare to continue to use my skills to assist folks today. I currently work with chronically homeless people that have been out in the street for several years. I also, have organized  fundraisers for the release of detained activists and detained people under ICE custody, domestic violence survivors, natural disasters, and issues that affect marginalized populations.

I  am now advocating for myself and I'm asking for my community and other folks to help me raise money to attend Hunter College for interpretation/translation for Fall 2018 or Spring 2019. Obtaining a certificate in interpretation and translation will give me access to tools I need in order to better serve monolingual Spanish/English speakers have conversations that otherwise would not happen. It will give the opportunity to lead a more stable life in this country.

I am asking for 6,000 to pay for tuition ($5,835) 
 and transportation to get to school.  If I am able to raise $1,570 by Friday 8/31 I will be able to start this year.
