Say No to Lara Incinerator Campaign

We are a local group of Lara and Geelong residents campaigning against the building of a harmful waste to energy incinerator in our backyard.

Just this week the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) has issued a Development Licence for the construction of the waste to energy incinerator.

This is a shameful decision by the EPA to green light the project, so we need the communities help to fundraise money to fight the decision and fund campaign materials.

This is going to be a long battle against a huge corporation so every donation great or small is most valuable.

WTE operator Prospect Hill international are yet to present a business case or Environmental Effects statement for this.

The incinerator is designed to burn 400,000 tonnes of garbage per annum. In the financial year 2021-22 the City of Greater Geelong collected 56,250 tonnes of red top bin waste, plus an estimated 12,938 tonnes of combustible commercial and industrial waste, totalling 69,188 tonnes of target material. But the incinerator capacity is over 5.7 times that amount. The remaining tonnage would have to imported into the City of Greater Geelong to keep the pair of incinerators constantly hot, productive and profitable. Lara should not become the dumping ground for waste.

Evidence shows that waste incineration is harmful to both the climate and the health of local communities. WTE Incinerators produce large amounts of greenhouse gas emmisions which are in contradiction with the state governments net zero plan.

Air pollution caused by waste incineration can also release dioxins and other toxins that could lead to negative health outcomes for nearby communities including respiratory issues, cardiovascular problems, and cancer risks.
