Saxons Class of 2020 Mosaic Mural

Help celebrate the South Salem High School (SSHS) class of 2020!
These are the students that have had the last semester of their high school year taken away from them. No going to State in track, baseball, tennis, orchestra, or show choir. No last curtain call. No prom. No formal graduation ceremony, no walking onstage as their family cheers, to get their diploma.
We want to let them know that their memories will not be erased.
For this project, every South Salem Senior will be invited to paint a 6x6 ceramic tile the way they might have decorated the top of their mortarboard (graduation cap). A team of local artists and volunteers will then use these tiles to create a mosaic of that iconic moment at the end of commencement when seniors toss their graduation caps into the air to celebrate. Amidst this scene of 400+ graduation caps tossed against sunset sky, will be a Saxon Crown emblazon with MMXX (Roman numeral for 2020). The tile mortar boards will individually honor each senior, preserving that moment that connects them with traditional commencements. The crown serves as representation of the coronavirus reclaimed as a Saxon Victory Crown, symbolizing the community’s triumph over the virus.
The money we raise will pay for ceramic tiles, glaze, firing of the tiles, and installation of the mosaic at the school. All while we adhere to strict social distancing regulation.
This project is in partnership with the Saxon Education Foundation (Saxon Foundation), a 501.C.3 non-profit, volunteer-run organization that supports academics and student success at South Salem High School. The Foundation raises and allocates funds to enhance programs in science, music, math, English, theater, history, languages, special education and more. https://sites.google.com/a/southsaxons.com/foundation/
