On September 24th, my 3-year old nephew, Sawyer Stout, was hit by a car after leaving gymnastics class. The accident was serious enough that he needed an ambulance to RRMC and a medical helicopter flight to OHSU Doernbechers in Portland. Sawyer suffered multiple fractures in his pelvis, along with extensive road rash and bruising. He has undergone many scans and tests to check for further injuries. Luckily, it does not appear that he will need surgery but his recovery will be long, requiring more tests to ensure he is healing and ongoing physical therapy to help him regain his strength.

Anyone that knows Sawyer knows that he is a silly, happy, ball of energy! He ensures everyone he is just a “little-bit-little” boy who adores gymnastics, bouncing on the trampoline with his sister, and playing at the park. He is currently obsessed with trains and marbles, and his sense of humor brings joy to everyone around him. Despite everything, Sawyer has been incredibly brave during this difficult time.

Sawyer’s parents, Lindsey and Curtis, have been so worried during this time. They both took off work as teachers at North Medford High School to go to Portland. They may have to stay there for a few weeks before Sawyer will be able to make the journey home. The financial impact of the ambulance and medical flight, hospital bills, and physical therapy is significant. We are raising funds to help cover these expenses, as well as expenses further down the road like special carseats and wheelchairs. Our goal is to help cover their out-of-pocket insurance maximum and additional expenses so that Lindsey and Curtis can focus on helping Sawyer heal and get back to the activities he loves (like the swim lessons he just started last week!).
