A tragedy in an already damaged city - a trauma for its people
Beirut harbour was heavily destroyed on August 4, 2020, by an explosion which for many Beirut inhabitants felt like war. 10.000 small and medium sized businesses were destroyed, small craft shops, coiffeurs, mini markets, small boutiques, little corner stores. The destruction is lethal because the infrastructure and lively atmosphere of this part of Beirut may be lost forever. Beirutis need our support to rebuild.
This is where Sawa4Beirut helps!
Sawa4Beirut is a grassroots effort started by Lina Ezzedine, founder of Visuals, a Beirut-based advertising and graphic design company; Aurore Ezzedine, a Beirut-based jewellery designer; Gilbert Jawal, a businessman; and a group of volunteers.
The organisation aims to help small and medium sized enterprises in the areas most affected by the 4 August blast restart. Please find the group’s Instagram page here: instagram.com/sawa4beirut?igshid=5x4nmsacjo5d.
The shops destroyed are in dire need of support for even the simplest things, a mirror, a lock, a hairdryer, tools, carpets, a simple cash register.
The cost to repair and replace these items vary - from Euro 30 for a new hairdryer to Euro 2500 for a new juice cart with equipment.
The project to rebuild these little shops in Beirut harbour is a longterm project, but financial support is needed right away, as soon as possible. Many people do not have anything left to start their businesses again.

These samples highlight the number of such businesses that they have assisted so far. More request are coming in every day and we will keep this updated with new examples for direct and simple support - to help giving the harbour back its face and helping the people to start working again,
Sawa4Beirut is transparent
Sawa4Beirut has applied for audit by Transparent Hearts, a joint collaboration between the Lebanese Transparency Association/No Corruption (LTA) and Nudge Lebanon. LTA is in the process of launching its transparency and integrity platform and will be assessing various civil society organisations (CSOs) and NGOs working in Lebanon, including Sawa4Beirut.
Given the immediate need of these enterprises, Sawa4Beirut has proceeded with its operations.
Having said this, it is important to emphasise that:
- 100% of the money raised so far has gone to helping affected enterprises.
- The group has been working closely with and is well known to Transparency Hearts, a joint collaboration between The Lebanese Transparency Association–No Corruption (LTA) and Nudge Lebanon, which was recently established to promote transparency and accountability in the humanitarian relief and reconstruction efforts
