I'm John Hamilton, director of Tasmanian Devil Unzoo, a wildlife centre in South East Tasmania, and I have spent the past 38 years working to conserve the famous Tasmanian devil.
Now the time has come to seek your help in a most interesting way.
Unfortunately devils now are critically endangered, so much so there are more blue whales and gorillas than Tasmanian devils left in the wild.
Devils are carnivores that mostly feast on wallabies and possums, quite commonly those that are killed on highways by road traffic.
Sometimes, however, devils themselves become road victims when they venture on to the road at night to feed.
Now we have a new solution, an electronic Night Owl alarm system triggered by vehicle headlights that can be set up along the roadsides to deter all native animals from entering the roadway. Trials indicate this can be more than 80% effective in reducing all roadkill, including devils.
Around 40 Night Owl units are required for each kilometre of road at a cost of $160 each. That's a total of $A6,500 per kilometre.
We urgently require a few kilometres of Night Owls, specifically to help preserve the precious wild devils in our isolated Tasman Peninsula region, now the only truly safe haven for wild devils on Earth.
Our initial target is three kilometres, or 120, Night Owls - $A20,000 - to back up 40 units which we at the Unzoo already have donated to the project.
You and your friends can support this vital effort directly by donating one or more Night Owls. This new technology really does work and you will be making a real contribution to saving one of the world's most iconic species.
We are working closely with the offical Save the Devil Program biologists on this program and all funds are managed through an independent trust fund.
We at the Unzoo and all our wild devil friends will really appreciate your help.
