My mother's journey and battle to fight brain cancer began in August of 2018. Headaches lead to an MRI, which showed a small lima bean on a scan where it should never be... the left temporal lobe of your brain. My mom was so brave and faced it head-on, going right into surgery. Then another blow out of nowhere, it was a stage 4 glioblastoma (the most aggressive brain cancer). This was terrifying, but in true Susan spirit, she was ready to fight.
Since she was young, Susan Boydston Burroughs has been taking care of others, helping her mom care for her five siblings after their father died young of a heart attack. My mom has dedicated her life to teaching children, her family, and caring for others. She taught for over 25 years in subjects ranging from special education, math, and religion at schools including Notre Dame Parish School (Denver, CO), West Jefferson Middle School (Jefferson County, CO), Big Horn Basin Children's Center (Thermopolis, WY), and Colorado State Home and Training Center (Jefferson County, CO).
Looking back at my parents' life, it is amazing to see all they have accomplished and done. They have been together for over 40 years, have had 3 loving children, and 4 energetic grandchildren. My father was a forensic scientist for 37 years for the Denver Police Department. My parents have always put their children and their family first. They have both been so strong in fighting this together.
My mother has always been so kind to all those around her and gave her time and funds whenever possible. Over the years, I can hardly remember a time when we were out and about together and didn't run into an old student or person she had helped wanting to catch up.
So, fast forward, Susan has bravely faced two brain surgeries in less than two years to have the tumor and recurrent tumor removed. She has battled against radiation and chemotherapy in her fight to live.
With her recent second surgery, she was selected as one of only TWO people, for a very rare clinical trial, one of the only options she has to left try and fight this. During the trial, she is getting immunotherapy and a vaccine that also uses immunotherapy to use her own body to fight cancer.
You can read about this special trial here: KEYTRUDA® (pembrolizumab) & DC Vaccination https://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT04201873
The hardest part of the process is the continued trips and stays at the hospital at UCLA in California. It has been a huge strain to pay for flights, hotels (the ULCA long term care facility charges. Thank you on behalf of Susan and Bob Burroughs, Caitlin Burroughs Canaan (her daughter), Luke and Josh (her sons), Bob Burroughs, and her large extended family and amazing friends.
