Savings gone due to Covid-19 and facing eviction

Hi. My name is Steve Polito. As I said in the title I've been hurt financially by COVID-19. I haven't caught it, but it has made me go broke.

A few years ago I started having trouble walking. By August 2017 I had to give up the crutches and use a walker. I went to see doctors, but it wasn't until I saw an orthopedic surgeon that I found out I need to have both hips replaced. I didn't have the money or insurance, so in 2019 I bought insurance and in January I sold my house so I could afford surgery. I paid off all my bills and moved into a motel. My plan was to get one of my hips replaced, then find an apartment and start working. But COVID-19 hit; all the apartment leasing offices closed and all hospitals here in Texas had to cancel all elective surgeries, meaning any surgery that can be scheduled.  That most definitively means orthopedic surgery.  My surgery was cancelled and I couldn't get in until July when Texas, or at least Collin county, allowed elective surgeries again. My surgeon like all the others I consulted insist I wait 90 days before having my hip replaced on the other side. I could have gotten it this month but I couldn't schedule it until Nov 16.

Living in motels is expensive and after paying all my bills back in January/February what I had left is gone. My family already kicked in all the money they could. There are other issues they have to attend to; my mom is currently receiving hospice care at her home, which is expensive. I'd like to go visit her before she dies but at least travel back to California for the funeral.

But I don't have money to pay for the motel after the middle of next week. I've applied for shelters but I'm on a waiting list. I applied for an apartment via the Metro Dallas Homeless Alliance but I don't yet fall into the category of homeless they can help. I've applied through various veteran's organizations but it seems nobody actually has immediate assistance.  I did try the VA but I keep falling through some crack or another and don't qualify (I was honorably discharged from active duty and I have the DD214 to prove it)

I really have no where to turn or anyplace to go. If I could walk, I could work, but it seems no one wants to hire a 58 year old guy who uses a walker. I tried to get some kind of work on-line but so is everybody else.

Update: As I was writing this my brother-in-law called. My mom died 30 minutes ago. So I'm just going to end this here.
