Hello! My name is Mariam Nguyen. Over the summer, I had the opportunity to visit the Kibera slum of Nairobi, Kenya. Originally, I helped to assist patients in a pop up medical clinic. After talking to these patients, I realized how much healthcare was needed, and how little the patients knew when it came to their health needs. I came to find out that there was only one ambulance for the entire slum of 500,000 people and that the average life expectancy was only 30 years old. This ultimately led to the launch of the “Saving Lives Educational Program”, a club to teach high schoolers all about the field of medicine and important skills to save lives. With this club, I aim to educate other high schoolers on first aid, CPR and basic medical knowledge. The idea is for the inhabitants of Kibera to be more medically self-sufficient. I hope to educate students and to motivate some students to pursue a career in healthcare, to help the future generations of Kibera. Despite being recognized by the Kenyan Ministry of Education, this program has received no funding. This money will go towards items that are needed to continue this program, such as projectors and speakers and all extra money will go towards medical supplies and assisting students with their school tuition. Thank you so much for your help!
