Hi, we are Tawana and Tayana Dunn. Two 15-year old girls from Sheffield. We were first introduced to the Malaysia trip our school was running in an assembly hosted by World Challenge last year and our entire year was awestruck and amazed. The natural beauty, hidden ecosystems and amazing landscapes in Kuala Lumpur and the surrounding regions inspired our twin telepathy to share the idea that we had to go for it. We have been a part many environmental projects before such as growing new plants and increasing the biodiversity in our primary school for the younger children after us to enjoy, and overall making daily choices to preserve the planet we call home. When we have gotten older, we have lent towards revamping our wardrobes as we have taken up the hobby of sewing, to reduce clothing waste and up-cycle as much as we can. This is ever so critical as our society is becoming one enlisting in fast fashion and mass clothing waste.

Conservation Project

The itinerary in Malaysia is so important and primarily focuses on protecting the endangered Hawksbill sea turtles and their habitats. It is so exciting that we have the chance to be a part of the project to hopefully save habitats and lives. This will include sheltering turtle nests, incubating the eggs, and guiding the hatchlings down to the sea on their first journey. The overall hawksbill population has declined by 80% in the last 50 years so this is ever important. We will also be improving the local communities, like the women and children, as much as we can in the short time that we spend there; through classroom lessons on core subjects as well as environmental safety. We will learn different survival skills and work in teams such as the cooking team , the budgeting team and the research team. The project will provide hands-on and valuable experience. We will be travelling to different local communities, providing education, local engineering and directly benefitting the community. This opportunity is a first in our school and we hope to inspire the younger generation to not be apathetic towards environmental conservation.

Impact

This experience will provide many valuable and transferrable skills that can be useful in university applications and help us to progress in our early careers. We will be finishing our GCSEs during this time and it will be an opportunity to destress before our a levels and boost our mental well-being.
