Dr. Tharanga Sampath Gunawardhana is a kind and devoted young (35) medical officer who works at Karapitiya Teaching Hospital in Sri Lanka. Beyond his commitment to healing others, he cherishes the role of a loving father to his four-year-old daughter. However, Dr. Tharanga's path has taken an unexpected turn as he faces a battle against blood cancer (Non-Hodgkin Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma - ALCL)

Despite having undergone six cycles of chemotherapy from October 2022 to March 2023, his PET scan results have revealed refractory signs. Consultant Hemato Oncologist Dr. Buddhika Somawardana has recommended a Bone Marrow Transplant followed by salvage chemotherapy to provide Dr. Tharanga with the best chance of overcoming his illness.

Currently, Dr. Tharanga is receiving salvage chemotherapy at Apeksha Hospital in Maharagama, Sri Lanka. However, the crucial transplant procedure and specialized aftercare required for non-Hodgkin lymphoma patients can only be performed at a private hospital in Sri Lanka. The estimated cost for his transplant and related medications amounts to LKR 7.5 million, and we need to raise this amount by the end of June 2023.

Dr. Tharanga serves as a registrar at Karapitiya Teaching Hospital, and before that, he worked as a medical officer at the psychiatric unit in Tangalle Base Hospital. He is a proud member of the 32nd batch of the Faculty of Medicine, Karapitiya, Sri Lanka, and he completed his A/L exams in 2006 from St. Thomas Boys School, Matara, Sri Lanka.
