My name is Cody. I’m a single dad with full custody of my two daughters, Elexus (13) and Elissa (9). I’m originally from Beausejour and Winnipeg, Manitoba, and the three of us have built our life in Camrose, Alberta, where I work in industrial maintenance and coach youth softball. My girls are deep into their sports, and being their dad is the best thing I do. A couple of years ago, my health started changing in ways I couldn’t explain. After a lot of testing, specialists in Edmonton confirmed two things: central diabetes insipidus, and a rare pituitary condition — a thickening at the base of my brain that has to be monitored closely. The serious causes were ruled out and, thankfully, it’s stayed stable. But the symptoms eventually got bad enough that I had to go on medical leave from a physically demanding job I’d worked hard to build. I wasn’t willing to just accept getting weaker and weaker. Along the way I’d been put on a steroid medication that I had questions about, so I kept pushing my specialists for answers and more testing. This March, after that re-evaluation, my endocrinologist took me off it. Since then I’ve been rebuilding my strength a little more every week — on the field coaching my daughter’s team, which has honestly become my own measuring stick for how far I’ve come. Here’s where we’re stuck. Going on medical leave cut my income, and after burning through my savings and my RRSPs to keep my daughters’ lives as normal as possible, we’ve reached the point where I can’t bridge the gap on my own. We’re now at real risk of losing our home. What this fund covers is simple: rent, so my girls don’t lose their home, school, and teams they know; the trips to Edmonton for my specialist appointments; and the out-of-pocket medical costs in between. This is a bridge, not a forever ask — my whole focus is getting healthy enough to get back to work and stand on my own again.
