Meet Sergeant Bilko, Sarge for short. Sarge is a 7 year old 100%, black and white European Basset Hound. He was sold from a reputable breeder in Washington State to a couple in California. From the moment he left the breeders home he was emotionally abused. (He grew up in a extremely stressful, dysfunctional and angry household. He developed Addison disease. Simply put, God gives all creatures big and small a hormone that helps our body reduce stress. Sarge used up all this hormone because of the stressful life he led and he was diagnosed with the disease at age 4). He needs to be injected with the synthetic equivalent of the hormone every 25 days and live on daily steroids for the rest of his life. When the authorities in California determined that Sarge was living in squalor the dog was given back to the original breeder. Since that breeder could not care for the dog, the dog was turned over to Houndful Hearts. Kyla and Margaret rescue those bassets that are unwanted by anyone else. When they picked Sarge up 12 weeks ago, he could barely stand or walk, he was extremely obese. In the past 12 weeks Sarge has been taken off the daily steroid and he went 9 weeks before the blood work determined that he needed a shot. This is amazing! Rarely can a dog come back that quickly from needing so much medication. Sarge had lost 20 pounds and could walk almost a mile everyday along the sands of the beach where we live. Still, something was not quite right, we tried to fix this “SOMETHING” at home. Still, Sarge went downhill quickly, they took him to their vet and X–Rays determined that he had too many stones to count. Sarge had been living with these stones for years. The stones were in his gut, his bladder, and his kidneys and most worrisome was the stones were stacked upon each other in the bone of his penis. He was extremely dehydrated, had a massive double ear infection and an eye infection to boot. He was immediacy put into emergency surgery to remove the stones. The Vet tried to push a Cather up his penis to get to the bone to dislodge the stones. The vet was not successful in doing this so Sarge had to have his penis removed and a new opening was made for him so he could urinate. He will need to learn how to squat and urinate. Sarge will remain at the hospital for several more days. Sarge will need LONG term care.
Houndful Hearts is an amazing Mother and Daughter Team that work tirelessly to rescue and re-home American and European Basset Hounds. The European Bassets come to them from Breeders from all over the USA. Simply put, once a male becomes too old or the females are not producing quality puppies the breeder determines that their cash cow needs to go, Why feed a animal who is not earning their dues? The Breeder will decide to euthanize the dog or sell the dog as a pet to someone. The problem then becomes that the dog has never lived in a house, been with people, has never left the breeders property so has no social skills, is not potty trained and does not know how to be a dog. Houndful Hearts will take on the management of the dog, who is usually 7 plus years old, and train the dog to enjoy life and how to be a pet. The dog stays with them as they give the dog both physical and emotional training, after the dog is healthy we re-home the dog so the dog can know life as a beloved pet. Houndful Hearts has been EXTREMELY successful in re-homing over 25 basset hounds to QUALITY homes and families without any charge to the adopter. Kyla works full-time as an administrative nurse. Margaret stays home with the dogs, sometimes as many as 20 dogs! They live in a simple unassuming home. They do not take vacations and have seen one movie at the cinema in the past 8 years. ALL the dogs go to the beach, rain or shine, 365 days a year to run along the Oregon Coast line. 3-years ago Houndful Hearts began a small breeding program to support the rescues. Between food and vet bills it cost around 2,500 dollars a month to keep the rescues healthy and happy. Houndful Hearts considers this their tiding.
They have NEVER asked or received help from anyone. The dogs come first, PERIOD. All bills, all wants and human needs are put on hold for the dogs .Every once in awhile a dog comes along that needs extensive medical treatment. Such is the case with Sarge. Houndful Hearts has exhausted all their funds for the dogs. Sarge needs help; his Medical bills month will be over 5,000 Dollars. It is money that Houndful Hearts does not have and it is causing a stress in the life of the household.
Houndful Hearts has a pack of people all over the country that have their Redcues as well as puppies and all can tell you they are the most caring people in the world and their dogs are their world so we will all rally around them during this challenging time.
If their is any question their vet can be contacted to verify Sarges story. You can even make a donation directly to them for Sarge’s care. If you call please ask to make a payment for “Sarge” under Maggie Free.
