Saving Paw Savers: Support Zamboanga's Crucial Animal Rescue

In Zamboanga City, Philippines, a city which faces significant poverty, animals are marginalized members of society. Strays, especially, are seen as nuisances and are not commonly adopted because of their mixed breed. Dogs and cats are beaten, neglected, and abused. Animals lack rights below the standard.

 

Paw Savers Zamboanga is a beacon of light in dark places like these. Running solely on donations, Paw Savers is an animal rescue that takes in neglected dogs and cats and also provides a haven for stray animals. 

In an environment that is not kind to animals, Paw Savers struggles every day.

Burdened with vet bills, a lack of adoptions, and urgent renovations, Paw Savers works tirelessly-- under unfinished ceilings and deteriorating walls-- to tend to the 80 dogs and 20 cats in their care. Yet, their limited resources prevent them providing the quality of care they aim to deliver.

**Office renovations go far beyond a simple "makeover". Paw Savers Zamboanga is physically lacking basic infrastructure-- ceilings, walls, and flooring. They are without even a bathroom or sink. Without these critical structures, shelter animals remain vulnerable to flooding, exposure to crime and violence, and the risk of escaping into unsafe environments.

My name is Julia Miranda and I'm a 19 year old college student born and raised in Brooklyn. I'm majoring in politics and minoring in animal studies, hoping to enter the public policy field to change animal welfare policies for the better. I'm also Head of Communications at the Animal Rights Collective, the animal rights organization at my university. Once every few years I get to visit my mom's hometown in the Philippines, Zamboanga. I started this project to help Paw Savers Zamboanga, a local animal rescue in the area, as I will be going back this summer. I hope this will be one of many campaigns I will start in the fight for greater animal rights.
