If You Fix It, They Will Come: Help Us Save Our Family Motel

In 2017, my wife and I did something bold.

We bought a neglected, rundown motel tucked away in a forgotten corner of town. The paint was peeling, the fixtures were broken, and there wasn’t a single guest. Most people saw a lost cause. We saw a future.

This was my American Dream, to build something meaningful with my own hands, for my family and for the community.

So, we rolled up our sleeves and got to work.

We poured love and care into every corner. We replaced, repaired, and repainted. Room by room, we brought the motel back to life, not with a team of investors or outside help, but with our own sweat and determination, working day and night.

And it worked.

Guests started to notice. They left glowing reviews on Google, Yelp, and TripAdvisor. Word spread. People returned, not just for clean rooms, but for the warmth, personal touch, and family feel they experienced here.

This wasn’t just a business, it became our life.

Then Everything Changed

When COVID-19 hit, our occupancy dropped by 90% overnight. Travel came to a standstill, but the bills didn’t.

We emptied our personal savings just to survive. During the lockdowns, we kept making improvements, believing we’d come back stronger.

But then, disaster struck again.

A contractor we hired to redo the exterior stucco botched the job. We had to redo everything, wiping out our last bit of working capital. Soon after, I suffered a life-changing disability.

Still, we never gave up.

I continue to personally manage bookings, do laundry, clean rooms, and greet guests. I even built our website and designed our business cards, cards that many of our returning guests still carry for the exclusive savings and promotions printed on them.

Now, we’re partnering with LAMAR Advertising to launch billboard ads along I-10, inviting travelers to rediscover our motel, a sign of our continued commitment to keeping this dream alive.

The Field of Dreams

One of the greatest inspirations for this journey has been the film Field of Dreams. The famous line “If you build it, he will come” stayed with me for years.

But for us, it became:

“IF YOU FIX IT, GUEST WILL COME.”

That simple idea gave us the courage to buy a broken-down motel and invest everything we had into it. We believed that if we built something with love, people would come. And they did.

Our story mirrors the spirit of the film: hope, tenacity, and an unwavering belief in a dream, even when the odds are stacked against you.

Though my beloved parents never lived to see our accomplishments, their values live on in everything we do.
