Saving Newlands Orphanage

Hi everyone. We are currently in Tanzania volunteering at an orphanage called Newlands, which is home to around 30 incredible children, aged between 3 and 15. The orphanage has been open for 15 years and the children living there have been  bought in by local people who have saved them from the streets or from unsafe or inappropriate family situations. Unfortunately, due to A lack of funding and subsequent poor living conditions, the buildings are now in such a dilapidated condition they cannot get the registration from the government that they need to stay open and unless the buildings are repaired they will be forced to closed down, leaving many of these children without a home or any form of support.

We have identified and costed the priority problems that need fixing - mainly a new roof and repairs to the windows and walls surrounding the girls dormitory and we have decided to try and raise the money to help keep Newlands open.  Just £1400 will cover the essential work to get the registration. Any additional money will of course be spent on creating a more comfortable and happy place for these children to live. You can see in the attached photos that the children are already living in some very basic and potentially dangerous conditions, but it’s better than nothing. We will be overseeing every aspect of this project as it happens - especially Sofia and Jonas who are here till the end of November - and the manager of our hostel, Mary, who is incredibly dedicated to this project. So you can be sure any money you kindly donate will play an active part in saving these children from a life on the streets.
