We are reaching out for your support for Miguel Macias, a brilliant and resilient teenager currently battling Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) and atypical Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (aHUS). This rare and challenging illness has turned Miguel and his family’s life upside down and put them unfortunately in a desperate position, and while he is fighting for his life in an intensive therapy facility, we are determined to rally together to support his parents with the hospitalization, treatment and medication costs. We hope you can help us in any possible way.

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), is the most common and most serious type of lupus. SLE is an autoimmune disease in which the immune system attacks its own tissues, causing widespread inflammation and tissue damage in the affected organs. It can affect the joints, skin, brain, lungs, kidneys, and blood vessels. There is no cure for lupus, but medical interventions and lifestyle changes can help control it.

aHUS is a rare but severe condition that affects the kidneys and blood clotting functions, this causes destruction of red blood cells, which can then cause kidney failure. Miguel has shown his great strength facing the challenges that SLE and aHUS combined causes on him. He is currently hospitalized in Guadalajara, Mexico, where he has been receiving intensive treatment, medication, and specialized care. He has already gone through several blood transfusions, hemodialysis and plasmapheresis therapy. Although these therapies are helping to keep him alive and reducing the toxicity of his liver and temporarily preventing kidney failure, they do not treat the underlying issue and his body continues to destroy his own red blood cells, which is the main life threatening risk he is facing.

As his family and friends, we are coming together to alleviate the financial burden and ensure that Miguel receives the best possible care and treatment. We want to ensure that he has access to Eculizumab, a medication that is crucial for his treatment because it reduces both the destruction of red blood cells and need for blood transfusion.

The medical expenses associated with managing SLE and aHUS combined are overwhelming, and any contribution you can make, no matter how small, will make a significant difference in Miguel’s journey to recovery and improved quality of life. As of today, Miguel requires 6 doses of Eculizumab, a crucial medication that can aid in managing his condition and allow him to recover. The price in Mexico for the Eculizumab treatment is CAD$54,000 (approx $681,000 pesos), at CAD$9,000 for each of the six required doses.

Miguel has always been a very kind and gentle soul. His noble nature could be seen through simple gestures such as sharing his own food with others, ensuring that no one would go hungry. He shares a special bond with his older sister, Tsibi, who misses him greatly and wants to have him home soon so that they can go to the beach together like they love to do. When Miguel leaves the hospital, he would like to continue the small business he and his sister started together, making delicious Mexican sushi that Miguel would sell in their neighborhood. He would also like to fulfil his life-long dream of becoming a film director: ever since he was just two years old his passion for movies would have him reenacting scenes from Ice Age, Cars and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, which were some of his favourite childhood movies.

Solicitamos su apoyo para Miguel Macías, un adolescente brillante y resistente que actualmente lucha contra el Lupus Eritematoso Sistémico (LES) y el Síndrome Urémico Hemolítico Atípico (SHUa). Esta rara y desafiante enfermedad ha puesto de cabeza la vida de Miguel y su familia y les ha puesto desafortunadamente en una posición desesperada, y mientras él lucha por su vida en un terapia intensiva, estamos decididamente uniéndonos para apoyar a sus padres con los costos de hospitalización, tratamiento y medicación. Esperamos que puedan ayudarnos de la manera que les sea posible.

El Lupus Eritematoso Sistémico (LES) es el tipo de lupus más común y grave. El LES es una enfermedad autoinmune en la que el sistema inmunológico ataca sus propios tejidos, provocando inflamación generalizada y daño tisular en los órganos afectados. Puede afectar las articulaciones, la piel, el cerebro, los pulmones, los riñones y los vasos sanguíneos. No existe cura para el lupus, pero las intervenciones médicas y los cambios en el estilo de vida pueden ayudar a controlarlo.

El SHUa es una afección rara pero grave que afecta los riñones y las funciones de coagulación de la sangre, lo que provoca la destrucción de los glóbulos rojos, lo que a su vez puede provocar insuficiencia renal. Miguel ha demostrado su gran fortaleza ante los desafíos que le provocan el LES y el SHUa combinados. Actualmente se encuentra hospitalizado en Guadalajara, México, donde ha estado recibiendo tratamiento intensivo, medicación y atención especializada. Ya ha pasado por varias transfusiones de sangre, hemodiálisis y terapia de plasmaféresis. Aunque estas terapias ayudan a mantenerlo con vida, reducen la toxicidad de su hígado vulnerado y previenen temporalmente la insuficiencia renal, no tratan el problema subyacente y su cuerpo continúa destruyendo sus propios glóbulos rojos, que es el principal riesgo de vida que corre.

Como su familia y amigos, nos unimos para aliviar la carga financiera y garantizar que Miguel reciba la mejor atención y tratamiento posibles. Queremos asegurarnos de que tenga acceso a Eculizumab, un medicamento que es crucial para su tratamiento porque reduce tanto la destrucción de glóbulos rojos como la necesidad de transfusión de sangre.

Los gastos médicos asociados con el manejo del LES y el SHUa combinados son abrumadores, y cualquier contribución que pueda hacer, por pequeña que sea, marcará una diferencia significativa en el camino de Miguel hacia la recuperación y una mejor calidad de vida. Miguel siempre ha sido un alma muy amable y gentil. Su naturaleza noble se podía ver a través de gestos simples como compartir su propia comida con los demás, asegurándose de que nadie pasara hambre. Comparte un vínculo especial con su hermana mayor, Tsibi, quien lo extraña mucho y quiere tenerlo pronto en casa para poder ir juntos a la playa como les encanta hacer. Cuando Miguel salga del hospital, le gustaría continuar con el pequeño negocio que él y su hermana iniciaron juntos, preparando un delicioso sushi mexicano que Miguel vendería en su vecindario. También le gustaría hacer realidad el sueño de su vida de convertirse en director de cine: desde que tenía sólo dos años su pasión por el cine le llevó a recrear escenas de La era del hielo, Cars: una aventura sobre ruedas y Lluvia de albóndigas, que fueron algunas de sus películas infantiles favoritas.
