My name is Christoph Bitzer from Stuttgart, Germany. Together with my Sierra Leonean friend Almamy Bah we started the project Saving Lives in Sierra Leone 3 years ago.

Sierra Leone is one of the poorest countries in Africa and health care is unaffordable for a huge part of the population

Far too many people lose their life because of diseases that are treatable, but they do not have the money to buy the necessary drugs.

The goal of our project is to help prevent these unnecessary deaths

Our team in Freetown is in very close contact with Connaught Hospital the biggest public hospital in Sierra Leone.

They contact us when they have patients in their wards that are severely sick but cannot buy the urgently needed medication for their treatment or cannot afford necessary medical tests.

We check on these patients and buy the drugs for them at a nearby pharmacy.

As a project we do not give money to the patients or doctors but only buy prescribed medication or pay for tests directly at the laboratory.

The costs to support one patient normally vary between 50€ and 200€ depending on the condition, which is very low compared to health care costs in Europe.

This is why we managed to support more than 200 patients over the last 3 years and we hope to be able to raise additional funds through this campaign to support more patients in the future.

Besides the direct support for patients, we have also donated drugs to health centers in the poorest neighborhoods of Freetown like Susan´s Bay or Kroo Bay and to health centers in very remote areas of Sierra Leone where people often cannot access the hospitals in the bigger cities.

Since 2024 our project is part of the German NGO Just Human e.V.. For the logistics of transferring the funds to Sierra Leone we are supported by Caritas in Freetown.

Mein Name ist Christoph Bitzer aus Stuttgart. Zusammen mit meinem sierra-leonischen Freund Almamy Bah habe ich vor 3 Jahren das Projekt "Saving Lives in Sierra Leone" ins Leben gerufen.

Sierra Leone gehört zu den ärmsten Ländern Afrikas, und medizinische Versorgung ist für einen großen Teil der Bevölkerung unerschwinglich.

Viel zu viele Menschen verlieren ihr Leben aufgrund von behandelbaren Krankheiten, da ihnen das Geld für die die notwendigen Medikamente fehlt.

Ziel unseres Projekts ist es, diese unnötigen Todesfälle zu verhindern.

Unser Team in Freetown steht in sehr engem Kontakt mit dem Connaught Hospital, dem größten staatlichen Krankenhaus in Sierra Leone. Sie nehmen Kontakt zu uns auf, wenn sie schwer kranke Patienten auf ihren Stationen haben, die sie sich die Medikamente für ihre Behandlung nicht leisten können oder die notwendigen medizinischen Tests nicht bezahlen können.

Unser Team vor Ort evaluiert die Fälle und kauft die Medikamente für ihre Behandlung in einer nahegelegenen Apotheke.

Als Projekt geben wir kein Geld an die Patienten oder Ärzte, sondern kaufen nur verschriebene Medikamente oder bezahlen Tests direkt im Labor.

Die Kosten, um einen Patienten zu unterstützen, liegen normalerweise zwischen 50€ und 200€, je nach Krankheitsbild, was im Vergleich zu den Gesundheitskosten in Europa sehr niedrig ist.

Deshalb ist es uns gelungen, in den letzten 3 Jahren mehr als 200 Patienten zu unterstützen, und wir hoffen, durch diese Kampagne zusätzliche Mittel sammeln zu können, um in Zukunft noch mehr Patienten unterstützen zu können.

Neben der direkten Unterstützung von Patienten haben wir auch Medikamente an Gesundheitszentren in den ärmsten Vierteln von Freetown wie Susan's Bay oder Kroo Bay sowie an Gesundheitszentren in sehr abgelegenen Gebieten Sierra Leones gespendet, da viele Menschen dort die Krankenhäuser in den größeren Städten nicht erreichen können.

Seit 2024 ist unser Projekt Teil von Just Human e.V. in Stuttgart. Die Caritas in Freetown unterstützt uns beim Transfer der Spendengelder nach Sierra Leone.
