An Extraordinary man! Gerald Thomas loved by so many, in grueling conflict with a callous state health system while battling MS! I suspected for quite some time that my brother was being neglected and or abused but could not prove it, his friends felt the same way I did but could not prove it. In visiting him, they would see mice and roaches and the facility maintained a putrid smell but would try to mask it with sprays that didn't work. This last visit to LB Memorial Hospital, yet another emergency visit; I was told that he was definitely being neglected since he had bed sores and severe dehydration. I finally convinced him that what was happening to him was wrong and he agreed to let me help.
When he was discharged from the hospital in Long Beach, they sent him to a facility in LA that has some of the worst reviews ever! I talked with him on the phone and he said please get me out of here it's awful. I have been on the phone with different facilities all over southern California they say "send us his info and we'll get back with you." Some say you are not going to find a place that will accept him with his current state of health. Others lead you on- every time I have called a skilled nursing facility that had spaces available, I ask vetting questions. These are: are you accepting new patients, are you accepting them on a long-term or short term basis, and do you accept medi-care. If everything looks good, I ask for the fax number so I send them his report. The result breaks my heart- I faxed 15 facilities and all say "we don't have any beds" or "we are no longer accepting patients." I find this difficult to accept since only 2 days ago (the time between my fax and their response) they were! It brings me to tears because I feel like he's now in one the worst places. Talk about running from a bear to a snake the place he is in is even worse than the last one. I cannot reconcile in my heart how such a good man can be tossed aside...callously by these supposedly special care facilities (he does need professional care) that treat people like cattle.
He needs real help. Not only is he in a very poorly performing facility now-just to escape the neglect he experienced, but I also know that there are new treatments out there for MS patients that he is not benefitting from. Here is where you can help.
1. I need help finding new facility! He needs a facility where he can receive the better care. This may be in or out of California. It is clear that this system is in trouble in CA.
2. His wheelchair was damaged at the old facility and they just stopped putting him in it so now he is stuck in bed all of the time.
My plan is to use any funds you feel wish to donate to pay for transportation to a new facility, purchase a new wheelchair with the needed cushions for comfort. To assist pay for any additional fees that the new facility may require, and to replace clothing and his shoes.
He is fighting everyday for his life. When I speak with him he says "GOD is good sis all of the time". Time is truly of the essence since under the restrictions of the "pandemic" we have no way to really see how much further degradation in the quality of care there is. We don't know what happening inside these places. He needs your help. Even a small donation goes a long way. Or if you can even help me to locate a good facility that he can find a new home in. Everyday he is fighting for his life! Help me help him...
