Save Madison's Historic Water Tower
Hi, our names are Sam Couch and Katey Nidbalski. We've lived in historic Madison our whole lives. Founded in 1867, Madison is a historically rich town in Lake County that was originally part of the Western Reserve. Madison is now and has been called "home" to thousands of people.
For the past ninety years, the Water Tower has been a shining beacon, a staple, and an icon of what it is to be at home. It was erected in 1929 by the Chicago Bridge and Iron Co., then later painted by Ashtabula native Laurie Robinson. The 128 ft. structure and its carousel mural has long been a memorable sight for I-90 motorists. Anyone would happily share their fond memories of gazing upon the Water Tower after a long commute from work or after a long trip on the highway.
Despite its sentimental value, the tower has now fallen into a sorry state. The once beautiful carousel mural has faded, and it has become a potentially hazardous structure due to its instability and to age. Therefore, local village officials, after a year's worth of debate and attempts to transfer ownership into the private sector; have decided that it would be more cost effective to demolish the beloved Water Tower.
The news of the planned demolition has been met with much dismay and overwhelmingly negative feedback. To see the removal of the local treasure would be a travesty to local residents and visitors alike. To lose the Water Tower is to lose a part of Madison's history. This would be yet another strike against the already dwindling historical artifacts in Madison, nay, Lake County! With your help and donation, we can save and restore this classic piece of history. Your donation would be put towards the inspection and renovation of the currently morose Water Tower. No donation is too small, any and all help is greatly appreciated and is one step closer to saving what is left of historic Madison. However, if our goal is not met, proceeds will then be donated to The Unionville Tavern Preservation Society's efforts to renovate The Old Tavern. Thank you!
