Save the Sorghum Syrup Tradition

Donation protected
I want to save the art of making sorghum syrup by training a new sorghum farmer to make high quality syrup . Your donation will be used to allow me to provide paid training for my helper.  The art of growing and processing  high quality sorghum syrup is threatening to die out with the older generation. Making good quality sorghum takes years of practice. I want to pass on this tradition to the next generation through training my young helper. Your donation will allow me to work side by side to train a new farmer starting in April and continuing through harvest in October.

I have been making molasses and working horses  for many years. In order to farm I also have to go to my part time job.  This limits the amount of quality time I can spend training my helper to be an accomplished sweet sorghum farmer. With funding I could stay home for one or two days a week and help her  learn this craft.

There are so many aspects to making high quality sorghum syrup: from  learning how to grow the cane, to setting up an old mill, and working with the draft horses. .Working with draft horses is a central part of work on my farm and is a skill that needs to be passed on. This is a sustainable agriculture practice that should not die just because some of us are getting tired!Making sorghum syrup is a labor of love. We need help keeping this Appalachian tradition alive. With just one day freed up through your donation a new Sweet sorghum expert will be trained!
The green juice boils down to beauful amber syrup if the farmer knows what she is doing. This takes years of experience .  I want to teach this craft. This season I have a young farmer who would like to learn. Your donation will help continue this amazing tradition and allow me to stay home to focus on training my helper. This might be my helper in about 12 years!
This one is old enough to get some real work done! Hurray!
Sorghum on apples can't be beat!

I hope you will come and see us at the farm this fall when we are making the best sorghum syrup you have ever eaten!
