Hey there. My name is Rudorwashe Mugabe. My biggest fear, besides that of spiders, has been that I will not graduate from college because I can not afford it. This fear is slowly becoming true as I am at risk of being unenrolled from my university because I can not meet payments nor will I be able to meet the semester fees for September 2018 term.
I am Business Management major (second year) at the African Leadership University (ALU), and my goal is to become an Organisational Psychologist. At school, I serve as a student ambassador and as a guest relations ambassador. Outside the classroom set up, I work as a Digital Marketing Associate for Shasha Network, a startup education platform that provides learning materials and resources to students in Zimbabwe and across Africa. I am also a poet, and I use my voice to raise awareness about abuse and sexual health, as well as to empower young women to be their own strength.
Financing my education has been a challenge since high school. My family does not have a lot of money. My dad is the sole provider, taking care of my siblings and me, as well as our extended family. Things have not been going very well where he works, and we have gone up to even three months without him paid. We have taken out loans to help pay my fees, but since he is not being paid, anytime any money is received it goes straight to repaying the loan, leaving us with barely enough to go by. I’ve been so scared that I might be forced to drop out.
Because of all the stress, my dad suffered from a stroke three weeks ago. This has added to our financial stress, as any money we had saved for fees has gone to pay for his hospital bills. Since he is on the road to recovery, he is also unable to work, meaning we currently do not have anyone providing for my family financially.
The $5000 I am trying to raise is part of my September 2018 semester fees, which will cover:
1. Tuition ( $3500 )
2. Housing/ Accommodation ( $1500 )
3. Food ( $1250 )
My total tuition for the year is $15000, but I am required to pay only $7000 as I am on a student loan that will support the other half of my fees.
I would really appreciate any help raising my fees.
Any additional funds raised will be saved for the next academic year. (I graduate in 2021)
