Save Rory's Life!

Hello, my animal-loving friends!

I'm writing because I need your help! I am back in Costa Rica for an internship this summer, and I took in a stray dog who was in desperate need of veterinary care. Her name is Rory, and she is a 6-7 year old mixed breed (here in Costa Rica, they call dogs like her zaguates). Rory used to have an owner, but he got new dogs and abandoned her at the local bus station. For many years, Rory has lived out her life in the local bus terminal, eating scraps of food wherever she could find them and developing a whole host of life-threatening diseases. I found her at the bus station covered in fleas and ticks, bleeding from her eye, and with open sores on her stomach, and took her to the vet.

I originally asked the local animal shelter to house her and find her a family, but they didn't have space or a foster family that could take her. We were looking at having to put her to sleep because of the cost of her treatments and the lack of space for her. So, I stepped in to foster Rory to save her from being killed. The local animal shelter is helping me with some of the expenses, but they are mounting quickly because of Rory's health issues. I need your help to pay for Rory's vet bills and save her life!
Here's a quick rundown of her problems:
-
Ehrlichia
- This is a tick-borne parasite (like Lyme disease) that is fatal if left untreated.
-
Heartworm
- This is a mosquito-borne disease that is fatal if left untreated, and the treatment is lengthy and very expensive.
-Tumors - Rory had a tumor on her right eye and several tumors on her stomach. The tumors had grown through her skin and were open sores. They were removed yesterday and I am waiting for biopsy results to find out if they are cancerous.

- Flea and tick infestations - Both have been treated, but the ticks left Rory with ehrlichia.
- An old leg injury - Rory walks mostly on three legs due to an old injury that never healed properly.
Despite all of these problems, Rory has a good shot at getting healthy and living out the rest of her life happily. I have taken on the cost by myself, save for a small amount (~ US $30) that the shelter paid for. I need your help to save Rory's life! She can survive, but only if I can afford to pay for the treatments that she needs!

Here is a breakdown of her treatments and the costs:
-Cost to transport Rory to the US (much of the vet care she needs, like heartworm treatment, is not available here in Costa Rica): $600
-Heartworm treatment: $1,000
-Tumor surgery: $200
-Bloodwork and Medications: $235
-TOTAL: $2,035
It has been so much fun to see Rory's personality come out over the past few weeks now that she is able to relax and know where her next meal is coming from. She has become really playful and loving, and she is already doing so much better than when I found her. She can recover and live a full life, but I need some help paying for her care. If you are able to donate, please help! If not, please share the link and spread the word!
Thank you so much! Rory and I are eternally grateful :)
Love and pura vida,
Rachel
