SAVE RICHIE FROM EUTHANASIA

Donation protected
SWEET 4-YR.-OLD RICHIE HAS BEEN AT THE WLA  SHELTER OVER 300 DAYS...HE'S NOW RUNNING OUT OF TIME. NO ONE  EVER ASKS TO MEET THIS GREAT DOG...

ALL BECAUSE HE'S RECOVERING FROM DEMODECTIC MANGE.

I am a longtime volunteer at the WLA Shelter in Los Angeles, CA.   I am trying to raise pledge money to attract a rescue who will save 4-yr.old Richie from euthanasia after spending over 300 days in a concrete and metal kennel.

Several volunteers and I have been networking Richie, and  we've been repeatedly told the best way to get interest from rescues -- who are inundated with requests to pull dogs -- is to pledge a significant sum towards Richie's rescue.  This will help cover the rescue's expenses to care for Richie until they find him a permanent home.  We volunteers are donating our own money, but we don't have enough to save Richie.

Please read his story so you can understand why we are working so hard to keep him alive.

Sweet Richie came to the WLA shelter as a stray on April 15, 2015 with a severe case of demodectic mange and was covered in scabs.   (The shelter staff believes he is a Sharpei mix, who is approximately 4 years old and weights 62 lbs.)

Despite his great discomfort and shyness, Richie quickly touched everyone with his gentle disposition.  The medical staff immediately began treatment, and Richie's condition started to improve.  Based on his initial behavior, Richie may have been a backyard dog, but it didn't take long for him to light up when seeing his favorite people and soak up their love and affection.

Richie is low-to-medium energy and learned great leash manners very quickly.  He has a soft mouth and is well-behaved during baths.  He's been tested with other dogs numerous times and is dog neutral. (Video links are below.)

Despite all his great qualities, no one from the public can see past Richie's appearance.   Day after day, visitors take a glance and walk right past this gentle dog's kennel without giving him a second thought.

In December 2015, the shelter vet said she believes it will be nearly impossible for Richie to fully heal at the shelter because he needs personal and consistent care.  She said euthanasia would be the best option.

Volunteers like me strongly disagreed that such a sweet dog's life should end for a treatable condition, so we pooled resources to bring him to a private vet.  In just two weeks, Richie's condition improved dramatically and has continued to do so with follow-up treatment.  (His new vet and her staff have quickly fallen in love with Richie as well!)  He just had a check up on 2/15/16 and is now only prescribed Temaril as needed.  His vet is very happy with his progress and happy to see new hair sprouting all over.

To fully recover, he needs to get out of the stressful shelter environment so he can get personal attention, consistent care and a nutritious diet.  But Richie is running out of time: The staff knows no one looks at him while his coat slowly grows out.  We are in desperate need of a rescue or medical foster so Richie has a shot at living the full and happy life he deserves.
