Support howler monkey orphans

Howlers are prone to climbing the power lines here in Costa Rica as they mistake them for vines. As a result, the mothers are often electrocuted leaving behind their babies. The babies cry for days longing for their lost mother.

Fortunately, when babies are found, members of the public have the opportunity to bring them to our experts at our Rescue and Rehabilitation Center. Here our veterinary team can provide the care and attention they need to recover from their traumatic experience with the goal of returning them to the wild. The cost of rehabilitating a baby Howler monkey is $50/month and most orphans require 2-3 years of care to reach a stage of independence that enables them to survive in the wild. This means the total rehabilitation cost can exceed $1,000 per orphan and last year, Rescate Wildlife Rescue Centre rescued 12 Howler monkey orphans.

We appreciate every donation and all the money goes directly to supporting our efforts to return these amazing animals to the wild. We are hopeful we can find donors that can support a baby for at least a month during its stay here by donating $50 or if your budget allows, $1,000 to cover the entire stay.

Until this year, Rescate Wildlife Rescue Center has relied solely on the generosity of people visiting our Life-time Care Sanctuary to provide the funding for our vital work of rescuing and returning Costa Rica's wildlife. Over 3,000 animals come to us every year in need of rescue and we are able to return the vast majority of them to the wild. But due to the travel restrictions caused by the pandemic, 89% of our income has disappeared. At the same time, we are receiving more animals than ever! Many smaller rescue centers have closed their doors and in the past 6 months alone, we have received over 700 animals from other rescue centers. These animals have nowhere else to turn!

We continue to rescue the animals despite the devasting economic hardship, 6 to 8 animals come to us every day, orphans...injured animals...animals confiscated from poachers. Please help us save them.

OUR STORY... (read more)

“Without biodiversity, there is no future for humanity,” - Professor David Macdonald, Oxford University.

Over the last 30 years, Rescate Wildlife Rescue Center (formerly named Rescate Animal Zooave) has played a huge part in Costa Rica’s biodiversity protection through wildlife rescue and release and endangered species breeding. Costa Rica is home to over 5% of the world’s estimated species, so the work we do is crucial for the future of humanity.

We are the largest rescue center of our kind and we partner with officials, the Costa Rican Government, and members of the public to take in and rehabilitate nearly 3000 animals per year, including sloths, jaguar, monkeys, toucans, coyotes, pumas, small cats and many more species of birds, mammals and reptiles. Our breeding program has reintroduced several endangered species to regions of the Costa Rican wild, including the Geoffroy’s spider monkey, the Scarlet Macaw, and more: a total of over 500 animals and with plans to reintroduce another 300 Scarlet Macaws by 2031.

Incredibly, visitors to the Lifetime Care Sanctuary have sustained our funding for 30 years, accounting for 99.9% of funds. Now, with the COVID-19 restrictions, we are struggling to fund even the most essential operations. We believe that this campaign can see us through the hard times as we wait for restrictions to ease.

We are doing everything we can to reduce daily operational costs. We have experienced a heart-warming level of food donations and medical supplies from local people and businesses. In addition, many of our staff members are postponing payment of their wages, and contributing a massive amount of voluntary hours which has significantly reduced our labor cost.  These actions have enabled us to reduce the monthly running cost from $45,000 to $28,000, however despite our best efforts, our financial reserves are dwindling fast, and we urgently need donations until our visitor levels return to normal.
