On Tuesday, 8/5, Poppy went into her vet office due to yellowing of her skin and lethargy. Anyone who has ever been around Poppy knows she has a very kitten and affectionate disposition. She loves sunbathing in the bathroom window sil watching all the birds fly by.

A little over a week ago, Poppy started getting sick. We associated this with her sneaking outside and wandering in the front yard. But she remained lethargic for about a week. Then we started seeing her bounce back, meowing more for attention, being cuddly. But never fully 100%. The day before we took her in, we realized her skin was turning yellow.

She underwent a series of blood tests, all her white, red and platelet counts were normal. Then they did a comprehensive panel. The ALP results were normal but ALT were high.

When checking her bilirubin levels, a normal range is 0.1 to 0.5 mg/dL, hers was an 8.0.

Early prognosis is Triaditis, which involves inflammation in the gallbladder, pancreas and/or small intestines.

The recommended treatment would be to do an ultrasound on her stomach under sedation. Then it would be to move her to a 24-hour facility where they would administer IV, food and medication. They would check her blood work daily to check for improvement, this would be over a 2-3 day course. This estimate was about $5,000.00 and not including the fees from the vets office.

Dr. West realizes that estimate is a huge factor and suggested the alternative. Still undergo the ultrasound, administer the antibiotics, pain meds and other medication orally. Additionally monitoring her food and water intake.

These are our only two options. The prognosis is guarded, which means regardless of the path we choose, he’s seen cats come out good and bad on the other side of it.

Poppy was adopted to help with Kirsten deal from an emotional fallout during the height of the pandemic. This is her emotional support animal and she is by far a large presence in our family. She is loved by all of us. This is why we are asking for donations and/or prayers.

(EDIT:) Poppy has now been properly diagnosed with pancreatitis. She is currently home being constantly monitored. Doctors have given 4 different medications and special wet food to feed her. Thursday we will take her back in to get more tests done to see if her condition has gotten better or if it has worsened.
