The Mauritian Diaspora Contribution Fund

As Mauritius reels from the devastating visit of cyclone Belal, we have decided to set up a taskforce that harnesses the power of the Mauritian diaspora worldwide to find ways that we can to help those most impacted as efficiently as we can.

Our objective is to help those most affected in the most timely and impactful manner. For the purposes of the response, we will be focusing our help on the people who are currently without a home and in a government shelter.

Phase 1 - Provide quality ready meals to those most in need from local restaurants.

We have started seeing how those who have lost everything and are currently in government shelters are struggling to access decent quality food. Emergency services are struggling to respond to the crisis and we believe that the first way we can impact is by providing a decent meal to those in need.

1. Partner with restaurants seeking their assistance to cook great quality, hot meals to those most in need

2. Partner with delivery partners who can deliver those meals quickly and efficiently

3. Seek out those most in need by starting from emergency shelters that the government has set up

4. Also seek out people in need of help through you, the people who are on the ground

Phase 2 - Get good quality clothing to those most impacted

1. Contact textile manufacturers in Mauritius to seek their participation in the taskforce

2. Deliver clothing vouchers to those most in need for them to purchase their clothing from participating partners

3. Pay those participating partners directly for each voucher redeemed

Phase 3 - Help those impacted get back into their homes with their basics looked after. We will look to

1. Ensure people have decent beds and mattresses in their homes

2. Ensure people's kitchens are equipped with a stove, a kettle a microwave, a fridge and decent cookware

3. We will seek businesses that will partner with us in this taskforce and pay them directly for purchases made by those in need.

4. Our aim will be to ask those business to create a fixed cost bundle that we can purchase and send to each household needing the help

We aim to create a fully transparent system where all money collected is sent to the account of the Lakaz Mama Foundation in Mauritius which then makes payments against goods and services and publishes its bank statements weekly on the website as well as on the GoFundMe page with each transaction having tax invoices attached to them. We aim to create the most transparent and auditable process. We will also seek pro bono help from finance and audit experts in Mauritius to ensure the system is fully transparent.
